Typically a diopter is a wheel or a slide bar found on most digital type cameras. The diopter controls some lenses in the viewfinder. This action allows the focus of your eyes to be matched up with that of the viewfinder of the camera.

Do I need to adjust my camera’s diopter?

Can you see your meters and scene in your view finder crisp and perfectly clear? Then chances are you do not need to adjust your diopter. Do you wear glasses at all? You may need to do some adjusting. Are your images crystal clear but your view finder scenes and meters are not? Adjust!

I would ask are you using auto focus and are the photos very sharp? If yes then no need to adjust. If yes and they are blurry, read your manual! There is another side to this question as well however. Since we are discussing diopters, if you are getting blurry viewfinder results but your images are crisp and sharp, once again, read your manual. On the rare occasion, something may be wrong with the camera and a service may be in order.

Is adjusting the diopter really useful?

Why yes, yes it really is! Adjusting the diopter on your camera will allow you to view the sharpest image that you possibly can. Why is that useful? This allows you to choose the proper focus points, browse subject scene and compose the picture before hitting the shutter release.

One use the diopter is not good for is increasing the sharpness of the actual picture itself. If you are seeing blur in the viewfinder it will not transfer to the actual photo. The diopters only purpose is increasing the sharpness of your view in the viewfinder.

Where is the diopter and how do I know it needs adjusted?

I can not speak for all but I wear glasses most of the time. On certain days my eyesight tends to shift and I can see better without glasses so I adjust my diopter. So mine changes all the time and needs adjusting. For the average person reading this I would say If you pick your camera up and can see the image in the viewfinder crystal clear and sharp you are good to go. How do the meters and wording look? Are they sharp as well? If not read on!

So how do I locate my diopter and how do I adjust it?

Most mirrorless and slr cameras today offer diopters in the form of wheels and sliders located very near the viewfinder. To get a better Idea, please see the image up top with the read arrow. Now that we know where our diopter is lets figure out how to adjust this thing.

Here is the steps that I personally prefer to take to adjust my diopter:

  • Mount your sharpest lens on your camera that can focus relatively close up.
  • Mount your camera to a tripod and make sure any form of VR is turned off. The scene needs to be good and flat and full of good contrast.
  • Making sure auto focus is on, focus in on the scene.
  • Take a test shot.
  • Zoom in on the image on the LCD screen and see if it is nice and crisp. If using a mirorless you may be able to use the viewfinder, please do NOT do this!

Ok so far so good now what?

  • Look through the viewfinder and adjust your diopter until the scene is blurry. Some just look and go if it is ok.
  • Bring it back until the scene is 100% as crisp as can be.
  • If the scene is crystal clear and the photo comes out blurry, refocus. If the photo is still blurry, you may need to visit a camera shop.
  • Repeat if you feel necessary.

Are there any options left before I head off to a camera shop for blurry photos?

Yes, actually there is another option! There are 2 options actually. The fist option is to try another lens to make certain that your current choice is not the issue. If you 100% certain the lens and camera are not the issue, your eyes just may be like mine and need adjusted as well! It truly is a matter of fact that needs considered at times. It can’t always be the equipment.

Just the facts ma’am!
